Free Crochet Bear Lovey Pattern

Pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.

MATERIALS 

• 1 Skein Loops & Threads Ombre Grande; Mojave Desert
• 3 Feet Loops & Threads Demi Purl; Deep Mahagony
• 1 Foot White Worsted Weight Yarn
• 6.5mm & 8mm Crochet Hooks
• 20mm Safety Eyes or 5 Feet Black Worsted Weight Yarn to Embroider
• Yarn Needle
• Stitch Marker
• Polyfil 

Finished Size

• 16"x16"

Abbreviations

• mc – magic circle
• ch – chain
• chs - chains
• dc - double crochet
• st - stitch
• sts – stitches
• sc – single crochet
• ss – slip stitch
• inc – increase 
• dec - decrease 
• (#) at end of each round represents how many stitches should be in round

NOSE

• Cut 3 Feet Loops & Threads Demi Purl; Deep Mahagony
• Insert needle inside the snout and come out between rounds 1-2 then insert again two rounds above to make a straight line.
• Repeat the last step but insert the needle one st to the right of center, then again, one st to the left of center.
• Continue wrapping around until the nose and nice and full, with no ivory yarn showing through.
• Then tie two tails together on the inside of the snout to secure in place.

BLANKET

Using Mojave Desert & 8mm Hook (IMPORTANT! Change hook size for blanket)

• Row 1: chain 6, then dc in the 4th chain from the hook. Dc in the remaining 2 chains [1 tile complete)
• Row 2: Chain 6. Dc in the 4th chain from the hook and in the next 2 chains.
  • Now flip your first tile up, so the yarn tail is on the bottom left (this is the corner). Locate the space between the ch 3 and dc from the first tile. We’ll refer to that space as the chain 3 space (ch 3 sp). To join the 2 tiles, slip stitch into the ch 3 sp.
  • Now chain 3 and work 3 dc’s into that same ch 3 sp. [Row 2 complete]

• Row 3: Ch 6, dc into 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. Lay this tile to the right, so you can slip stitch in the next step. Slip stitch to join to previous row. (Same as above, you will slip stitch into ch 3 sp). Ch 3 and work 3dc in ch 3 sp.* Repeat to create the last tile of the row. [Row 3 complete]
• Rows 4-12: Repeat previous rows until you have 12 tiles on each side of the triangle.
  • Now we’ll stop increasing and start creating the other side of the square.
  • At the end of the 12th row, turn, slip stitch into the 3 dc’s and into the ch 3 sp, then ch 3, 3 dc into ch 3 sp
  • Slip stitch into ch 3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc into ch 3 sp.
  • Repeat until you complete all the tiles in the row.
  • Cut an 8" tail and weave in your ends.

ADDING THE BEAR HEAD TO BLANKET

**USE 6.5mm HOOK FOR THIS PART**

• Locate the 4 center tiles - between the 6th and 7th tile along each side.
• Round 1: Place your hook under one of the dc’s, pull yarn through and sc to get hooked on, then ch 1 (this is the first st in the round). Do 11 more sc, going under each of the 3 dc’s in those 4 center tiles. (12)

• Round 2: [inc, sc] x6 (18)
• Round 3: This is the round where you’ll attach the arms using no-sew method. Insert your hook through BOTH layers of the top of an arm and the head then sc in 4, now sc in 5 (head only), then grab second arm and sc in 4, then sc in 5 (18)
• Round 4: inc x18 (36)
• Round 5: [inc, sc in 5] x6 (42)
• Rounds 6-14 (9 rounds): sc in every st around (42)
  • Snap eyes between rounds 10-11 with 6 sts showing in between. Start stuffing with polyfil.
• Round 15: [dec, sc in 5] x6 (36)
• Round 16: [dec, sc in 4] x6 (30)
• Round 17: sc in every st around (30)
• Round 18: [dec, sc in 3] x6 (24)
• Round 19: [dec, sc in 2] x6 (18)
• Round 20: [dec, sc] x6 (12)
• Round 21: dec x6 (6)
  • Cut a 12" tail, sew hole closed and tuck in tail.
• NEXT: Sew the snout onto the head, centered between the eyes from rounds 5-10 of the head. Stuff with polyfil before closing it completely. Make sure nose is at the top and centered between eyes.

EYE DETAILS

• Sucked In Eyes: These are completely optional! Directions below if you’d like to do it, but it wouldn’t change the look much if you prefer not to.
  • Cut 16" of white worsted weight yarn and grab needle. Insert needle into the back of the head and come out at the top right corner of an eye then insert at the top left corner, move needle back to the first st where you entered. Tie the two tails together tightly and tuck in. Repeat this above the other eye. 
  • Cut another 16" of white yarn and repeat the steps above on the bottom corners of eye.
• White Liner: Cut 12" of white worsted weight yarn and grab needle. Insert into side of head and come out at the bottom center of eye then insert at the top right corner of eye so yarn is “hugging” the side of the eye. Repeat on the other eye.
  • Move the end tail to the same st where you first entered. Tie the two together twice to secure in place then tuck in.
•  Black Liner & Eye Brows: Cut 18" of black worsted weight yarn and grab needle. Insert needle into side of head and come out at the top left corner of the right eye, then insert needle halfway down the right side of the right eye.
  • Repeat on the other eye, but mirror it.
  • Then add a diagonal line two rounds above the left eye, slanted up towards the center, like pictured. Repeat above the other eye.
  • Move the end tail to the same st where you first entered. Tie the two together twice to secure in place then tuck in.
