From Crochet Seller to Crochet Teacher – How I Discovered My Brand

In December 2023, I was at a local craft market selling my handmade amigurumi crochet plushies when something unexpected happened. Several customers stopped by my table and asked if I taught crochet.

At the time, I said no. I told them they could watch videos on YouTube — after all, that’s how I learned. But a month later, I ran into one of those customers again when I delivered a custom crochet order. She asked me the same question: “Do you teach crochet?” Then she said something that stopped me in my tracks: “I want to learn from you because I love your style of amigurumi.”

That was the moment I began to understand the true meaning of a brand. Simply Hooked wasn’t just a place to find handmade crochet gifts — it was becoming a community. People weren’t just looking for crochet lessons; they wanted to learn crochet my way.

Overcoming Crochet Teaching Imposter Syndrome

My first reaction wasn’t excitement — it was fear. I thought: Who am I to teach crochet? There are so many other instructors online with more experience and better tutorials.

But in February 2024, I joined a business coaching program. The instructor talked about building online courses and how teaching had transformed her business and life. She said something that stuck with me:

“Share your knowledge. Serve others by teaching them a new skill.”

It clicked. Teaching wasn’t about being the “most experienced” — it was about connecting with beginners, breaking things down clearly, and encouraging them every step of the way.

Creating My First Crochet Course

Spring 2024 was busy, but by June, I decided to go for it. I set up a small recording area in my home and started filming my beginner crochet course. It was a lot of work:

● Filming hours of step-by-step crochet tutorials
● Writing and rewriting the crochet course curriculum
● Editing video content so it was clear and beginner-friendly
● Creating a crochet starter kit so students didn’t have to guess on supplies
● Testing the lessons with real beginners to make sure they worked

After eight weeks of dedication, the Let’s Get Hooked: Learn to Crochet Course launched.

Why This Matters for Crochet Beginners

If you’ve ever wanted to learn crochet, you know how overwhelming it can be to figure out where to start. That’s why I created this beginner-friendly crochet course — to give new crocheters the confidence, guidance, and structure they need to go from “never touched a hook” to “look what I made!”

It’s proof that sometimes, your customers can see potential in you before you see it in yourself. And when you step into that potential, you can create something that changes lives — including your own.

Simply Hooked Marcy replied:
Hi Leilani! I’m sorry for the confusion! The day you purchased the starter kit, you should have received an email from Teachable with access to the learn to crochet course, which coincides with the kit. I’ll follow up with you via email, too!
