Identifying the "Excellence" Trap: Many creatives stall in the "Zone of Excellence" because it is comfortable and profitable, yet it lacks the deep fulfillment found in the "Zone of Genius."

Energy as a Compass: To unlock your potential, you must pay attention to which tasks leave you energized versus which leave you drained; your genius always provides a net gain in energy.

The Service Component: A true Zone of Genius isn't just a personal hobby; it is a unique skill set that provides significant value and joy to a wider community or market.

Have you ever felt like you were drifting through your daily tasks on autopilot? You might be capable and successful by every external measure, yet you still feel like you aren't quite hitting your stride. For years, I felt that exact same tug—the sense that I was capable of more, but I didn't know how to unlock my potential.

At 37, I had a realization that changed everything: my "Zone of Genius" is crochet. For a long time, I treated it as a beloved hobby—a way to de-stress after a long day in communications. But when I began to treat it as a professional business, something clicked. I started waking up energized, excited to design new amigurumi patterns and connect with my community. It didn't feel like "work" anymore; it felt like I had stepped into the most authentic version of myself.

This transformation wasn't an accident. It is a process described by Gay Hendricks in his book The Big Leap. It is about finding the place where your natural skills, deep passions, and unique purpose intersect.

Understanding the Four Zones of Work

To unlock your potential, you first have to understand where you are currently spending your energy. Hendricks outlines four distinct zones:

  • Zone of Incompetence: Tasks that drain you and that you aren't particularly good at.

  • Zone of Competence: Things you can do adequately, but they provide zero fulfillment.

  • Zone of Excellence: This is the "danger zone." You are highly skilled here and often well-paid for it, but it doesn't light you up inside. Most people get stuck here because it feels safe.

  • Zone of Genius: This is your sweet spot. It is where your unique talents and passions meet. When you are here, time disappears, your energy soars, and your work provides the greatest impact for others.

Most entrepreneurs spend their lives in the Zone of Excellence. It’s "good enough," but it isn't where true magic happens. Stepping into your Zone of Genius is what allows you to move from being "busy" to being truly impactful.

Why Finding Your Genius Shifting Everything

When you operate in your Zone of Genius, the "frequency" of your life shifts. Instead of finishing the day feeling drained, you finish feeling more alive. For me, I realized my genius wasn't just the physical act of crocheting; it was my ability to design beginner-friendly patterns that empower others to find their own creative joy.

When you lean into your genius, you aren't just helping yourself—you are serving the world with the very best version of your gifts. This alignment is the fastest way to unlock your potential and build a business that feels sustainable and joyful.

5 Questions to Help You Identify Your Zone of Genius

If you are wondering where your own genius lies, take some time to reflect on these questions:

  1. What makes you lose track of time? What activities are you doing when an hour feels like five minutes?

  2. What feels like play to you, but looks like work to others? Your genius often feels so natural to you that you might not even realize it’s a high-level skill.

  3. What is your unique contribution? What do people constantly ask for your help with?

  4. When do you feel most "in flow"? Identify the tasks that give you a "high" or leave you feeling recharged.

  5. What would you do if money wasn't an issue? This often points directly to your core passion.

Moving Past the Blocks

Even when you find your genius, the "Big Leap" can be scary. We often self-sabotage because we are afraid of leaving the comfort of our Zone of Excellence. We worry about what happens if we actually succeed or if our "practical" friends won't understand our new path.

But remember: settling for "excellence" when you are meant for "genius" is a disservice to the people who need your unique light. For me, leaning into crochet allowed me to reach people in ways my corporate job never could. I’ve helped makers reduce stress, helped moms build their own side hustles, and created heirlooms that will be cherished for generations.
